Irene Dionisio’s ‘Idda’ Heads to TIFF 2026 for World Premiere

Italian filmmaker Irene Dionisio brings her sophomore feature Idda to the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival, where it will make its World Premiere as part of TIFF’s prestigious Platform programme. Starring Tecla Insolia (The Art of Joy) and Romana Maggiora Vergano (There’s Still Tomorrow), the drama follows Adele and Sofia, childhood friends who reunite in their thirties to finally accomplish a dream they have carried with them since they were young: climbing to the summit of Sicily’s Mount Etna. What begins as a long-awaited journey together soon exposes tensions beneath their friendship, leading to a painful confrontation that reopens old wounds and brings previously hidden secrets to the surface.

After the two women separate, the rumbling presence of Mount Etna takes on an increasingly emotional significance for Adele, who is left to confront both the fractured friendship and her own unresolved feelings. Continuing the journey alone becomes a path toward forgiveness and self-reconciliation, with the volcanic landscape providing a striking backdrop for a story about memory, friendship and the complicated bonds that endure over time. Written by Dionisio and Marco Borromei and produced by Giovanni Pompili, Idda joins 11 other films competing in TIFF’s 2026 Platform programme, the Festival’s competitive section dedicated to distinctive directorial voices from around the world.
