Netflix’s Below Cast and Creator Dive Into Newfoundland Folklore at TIFF 2026

FERNTV hit the red carpet at the Toronto International Film Festival for the premiere of Netflix’s Below, where we caught up with stars Ruby Stokes, Charlie Heaton and Rohan Campbell, along with showrunner Jesse McKeown. The cast shared their experiences bringing the mysterious series to life in Newfoundland, and it was clear that despite the darker and more supernatural world of Below, they had a blast filming together on Canada’s East Coast.

Stokes, Heaton and Campbell reflected on their time in Newfoundland and the experience of working against the province’s rugged and atmospheric landscape. The location provides a fitting backdrop for a series steeped in mystery, folklore and the unknown, while the chemistry and camaraderie among the cast extended well beyond what audiences will eventually see on screen.

McKeown also spoke with FERNTV about how Newfoundland itself helped inspire the mythology behind Below. He explained that when you live in Newfoundland, you naturally encounter these kinds of folklore and mythical stories—including tales about mysterious creatures lurking beneath the surface. That connection between Newfoundland’s storytelling traditions and the supernatural world of Below makes the province more than simply a filming location; it becomes an essential part of the series’ identity.
