The Face of Horror TIFF 2026: Technicolor Horror Hits Midnight Madness
Anna Biller returns with The Face of Horror, a gothic tale of supernatural revenge premiering at TIFF 2026 Midnight Madness and paying tribute to the vivid beauty of Technicolor cinema.

Anna Biller makes her long-awaited return to the big screen with The Face of Horror, set to have its World Premiere as part of the Midnight Madness programme at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival. Marking Biller’s first feature since her 2016 cult favourite The Love Witch, the film continues the filmmaker’s fascination with the visual language of classic cinema. This time, Biller ventures into medieval gothic horror with a film conceived as a lavish tribute to the Technicolor era, embracing rich, heightened colours and meticulously crafted imagery to evoke the look and atmosphere of vintage Hollywood.
Set in 14th-century England, The Face of Horror follows an unfaithful man who becomes haunted by the ghost of his dead wife, who returns seeking revenge. Kristine Froseth leads an ensemble cast that includes Jonah Hauer-King, Bella Heathcote, Ellie Bamber, Leo Suter, and Ben Radcliffe. Biller blends supernatural horror, romance, betrayal, and dark fantasy with an intentionally theatrical aesthetic inspired by the gothic cinema of decades past. Its saturated palette and stylized production design serve not simply as nostalgia, but as a tribute to Technicolor filmmaking, transforming the medieval setting into a vivid and haunting cinematic world.
The Face of Horror arrives at TIFF as a natural fit for Midnight Madness, the festival’s celebrated home for adventurous, provocative, and unconventional genre filmmaking. Biller’s return after a decade away from feature filmmaking makes the premiere especially anticipated, while her commitment to recreating the richness of classic Technicolor promises a horror experience made for the big screen. With its combination of ghostly revenge, gothic romance, striking colour, and old-Hollywood craftsmanship, The Face of Horror could prove to be one of the most visually distinctive entries in TIFF’s 2026 Midnight Madness lineup. FERNTV says this is surely not to be missed.
