TOP 5 INTERNATIONAL SHORTS THAT KILLED IT AT TADFF

The Blue Door

A magnificent short horror film from director Paul Taylor stars Gemma Whalen, from Game of Thrones, as a nurse who is assigned to a dying patient living alone in a dilapidated bungalow.  The nurse discovers that there is some weird and scary stuff that is occurring in the apartment not to mention the dying patient is damn creepy on her own.  The Blue Door is original in premise and just sometimes keeping the door closed is just not good enough.

Shift

Johan Earl‘s short sci-fi film gives a breath of fresh air to sci-fi fans.  It seems that fans have been fed a steady diet of cheesy sci-fi films that have really diluted the genre but Shift really amps it up.  Set in a dystopian future, a human resistance group does battle with an unexpected force.  It’s great to see Bianca Bradey back on the silver screen at the Toronto After Dark Film Festival after her success with the film Wyrmwood.  Here’s hoping that this film which has the feel of Universal Soldier and the game Halo will grow into a new universe.

The World Over

Heath C. Michael‘s film about a reclusive mother, played by Tess Granfield, who discovers a key that opens up a portal in which her husband, played by Brett Keating,  decides to snoop around.  What was supposed to take mere minutes takes what seems like a lifetime to her when her husband does not come back.  She then decides to go look for her husband and discovers her doppelganger.  The World Over is sharp and clever and just goes to show you that sometimes the grass is not greener on the other side.

A Death Story Called Girl

The poster and texture of this film remind us of the original cult classic I Spit On Your Grave.  Director Bas-Ztion Beahan short horror film follows a young nihilistic girl, played by Livy Bennett, who goes galivanting in her rich suburbian confines.  Without dialogue, A Death Story Called Girl allows you to get into the mind of this young girl who is about to get into something deep and dark.  The scenes are really thoughtful and engaging and yet twisted which allows this film to flourish to unexpected levels.

9 Pasos (9 Steps)

This short film by directors Marisa Crespo and Moisés Romera takes you back to your childhood when you had those moments when you were afraid of something dark in your own house.  9 Pasos is about young Saul who wants to go to the washroom but is afraid of getting there because of a dark hallway.  His father tries to get him to go and walk across the hallway and get things over with because he wants to get to sleep.  Oh, what it would be like to be a kid again and truly figure out what really scared us about those dark spaces and places.
