It’s that wonderful time of the year where we get a sneak peek into some of the future or rising stars of Canadian genre films especially when it comes to the vision of directors.  This list comprises of the Canadian shorts that were screened before the feature film to get everyone into the mood during the Toronto After Dark Film Festival.  To begin this list, we were utmost impressed by Sophie B. Jacques’ film Foyer (Hearth) which had us looking forward to what is coming next from this director.  Foyer (Hearth) focuses on a woman named Emile, played by Marilyn Castonguay, who comes back home after renting out her house online.  She has no clue that some extracurricular activities were going on in her apartment other than a bunch of young adults boozing and doing drugs.  There was a lot more to it than that.  The musical score is next level and Sophie B. Jacques gets you into that Lars Von Trier mode like in the film The House That Jack Built.   After watching this film, you will probably never look at AirBNB the same way again.

FERNTV loves the fact that the city of Toronto has no quit in them especially when it comes to horror.  An online collective group of artists and movie producers in the GTA has been formed called Deformed Lunchbox to get great horror content and art out there.  The short film Make Me a Sandwich by director Denman Hatch was a pleasure to watch and reminds us to be grateful in life and never to treat our loved ones like shit.  This gem is a great representation of what is to come from Deformed Lunchbox which is producing quality content and doing it the right way with a lot of support.

In the short film, Eyes Open which screened recently at Toronto After Dark, a woman walks into the woods with her dog and are both disturbed by a haunting presence.  What we enjoy about this film here is that director Jawed J.S. concentrates and pays attention to detail on the sight and sound in the film which is so pivotal in making horror films.  Jawed J.S. knows those little things that mean a lot and we are sure that himself along with Cinner’s Light Media will have one hell of a future ahead of them.  So we have to say here on FERNTV that we should keep our Eyes Open on this crew.

Toronto’s own Brodie Spaull and Paul Krysinski create this post-apocalyptic web series set in Toronto called Dark Before DawnToronto After Dark screened one of their episodes called Dark Before Dawn:  Convoy where a group of men are travelling with special cargo and have to make sure nobody gets their hands on it.  We can’t stress enough how much dedication and passion that both Brodie Spaull and Krysinski has put towards this web series and having to wear many hats behind the camera and to also star in front of the camera.  Dark Before Dawn is not to be slept on at any time of the day so take a look at their web series.

Director BJ Verot‘s short film Patterns focuses on a man who receives a mysterious phone call and goes down a dark path.  We like the creativity of this director and we would love to see him get his hands on getting a feature film put together.  We find here on FERNTV that this director has a unique spark to his game where it will take him to many places.  We can also see some genre-bending and blending that director BJ Verot will do seamlessly in the near future as we saw in Patterns.  This film deserves loud applause during the ending credits just like the rest of the films on this list.
