The Wizard of the Kremlin @TIFF 50
Paul Dano stars as Vadim Baranov in The Wizard of the Kremlin set to debut at TIFF 50

Director Olivier Assayas delivered one of the most unique films at TIFF during 2016 with Personal Shopper starring Kristen Stewart. The auteur returns to the festival’s 50th anniversary with The Wizard of the Kremlin adapted from acclaimed author Emmanuel Carrère from Giuliano da Empoli’s 2022 novel. The story revolves around Vadim Baranov, played by Paul Dano, who takes upon the interest of an American journalist curious about Russian politics. Jeffrey Wright, who plays the journalist, is invited to Baranov’s luxurious dacha. He has much to reveal to the journalist, as he was Vladimir Putin’s political advisor, otherwise known as his right-hand man.
Baranov reflects on his life in the post-Soviet era where he was watching trashy television shows and where he met the love of his life, played by Oscar-winning Alicia Vikander. Many other events also happened under his watch, such as the Chechen war and the sinking of the Kursk nuclear submarine. However, Baranov was known for playing a significant role in convincing Vladimir Putin to transition from being the Chief of the Federal Security Service to the President of Russia.
The Wizard of the Kremlin also stars Jude Law, who is again expected to deliver a fine performance. This ensemble cast is unlike any other and is sure to turn heads at TIFF. FERNTV believes that this film will be the sleeper to this year’s festival.
