Consensus Gentium @SXSW 2023

Consensus Gentium is an immersive experience where the audience is transported to a futuristic technocratic society. Directed by TED speaker Karen Palmer, the audience uses their phone as the epicentre of the experience. It takes you to years in the future where AI bias is prevalent. Also, these technologies are perceived to be more invasive rather than smart.

The experience uses facial detection technology to allow the AI on your phone to harness a vertical narrative experience. The audience becomes more intimate with the story through the authenticity and connection of their phone. The future dystopian set and immersive actors allow you to see the clear distinctions between now and the future.

What is fascinating about Consensus Gentium is there are no big VR headsets that will be wrapping around your head. Your phone is an integral part of developing your story within Consensus Gentium. Each person will get an intimate first-hand look at how surveillance technologies will oppress visible and marginalized groups. This is what concerns Karen Palmer because we are all going to create this future together.

Director Karen Palmer is a true innovator. There are plenty of other ways to tell a story through technology. Clearly, Karen has developed this right in front of everyone’s eyes.
