Actor Sam Neill dies at 78

The film world is mourning the loss of legendary New Zealand actor Sam Neill, who has died at the age of 78. According to a statement released by his family, Neill passed away suddenly in Sydney while surrounded by loved ones. The acclaimed actor had publicly shared his battle with angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma in 2023 and, earlier this year, revealed he was cancer-free following an experimental CAR T-cell therapy treatment. His family described his passing as “sudden and unexpected,” while noting he had remained free of cancer. Tributes from across the entertainment industry quickly poured in, including heartfelt messages from director Steven Spielberg and fellow actors who celebrated Neill’s warmth, generosity, and remarkable career.
Over a career spanning more than five decades, Neill became one of cinema’s most beloved and versatile performers, starring in iconic films including Jurassic Park, The Piano, The Hunt for Red October, Dead Calm, Event Horizon, and Jurassic World Dominion. His portrayal of paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant made him a household name and secured his place in film history, while acclaimed performances in both independent cinema and television, including Peaky Blinders, earned him international recognition. Knighted in 2022 for his contributions to the arts, Sir Sam Neill leaves behind an extraordinary legacy that inspired generations of filmmakers and movie lovers around the world. FERNTV we definitely lost a good one.
