Inside In the Heart of the South: Anna Lambe and Nyla Innuksuk at TIFF

FERNTV caught up with Anna Lambe and director Nyla Innuksuk on the TIFF red carpet for In the Heart of the South, where the conversation explored some of the film’s more provocative themes surrounding Indigenous representation and the film industry. Lambe discussed how the film examines the complicated idea of Indigenous artists feeling pressure to draw upon — and at times exploit — their own trauma in order to advance within the industry. Through its characters, the film raises questions about what kinds of Indigenous stories are rewarded, who gets to tell them, and the personal cost that can come with turning lived experiences and trauma into a pathway toward professional success.

Innuksuk also spoke with FERNTV about managing expectations after the success of North of North. When asked about the pressure and anxiety that can accompany that kind of success, she connected the conversation to In the Heart of the South and its character’s journey toward learning to let go of those stresses. Rather than allowing expectations to dictate what comes next, the film explores the importance of releasing anxiety and finding a healthier relationship with ambition, identity and storytelling. FERNTV’s TIFF conversation with Lambe and Innuksuk offered a deeper look at a film willing to examine both the opportunities and complicated pressures facing Indigenous creatives working within the film industry.
