Everest: The Other Side set to erupt @TIFF 2026

Everest: The Other Side, the latest documentary from Academy Award-winning filmmakers Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin, will make its Toronto International Film Festival premiere as part of TIFF 2026’s Special Presentations programme. The directors of NYAD follows elite ski mountaineers Jim Morrison and the late Hilaree Nelson, whose relationship was forged through a shared passion for pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the world’s highest mountains. Their ultimate ambition becomes an attempt to climb and ski the direct North Face of Mount Everest — one of the mountain’s most dangerous routes and a descent that had never been successfully completed. The film screens at TIFF beginning September 12 at Scotiabank Theatre Toronto.

More than an extreme-sports documentary, Everest: The Other Side explores the emotional relationship between Morrison and Nelson as they balance love, loss and an extraordinary appetite for adventure. Both climbers had already experienced tragedy in their lives before joining forces to pursue some of mountaineering’s greatest challenges. Vasarhelyi and Chin, the filmmaking team behind the Oscar-winning Free Solo, once again turn their cameras toward people willing to accept enormous risk in pursuit of seemingly impossible goals. Produced by National Geographic Documentary Films and Little Monster Films, the documentary combines the scale of Everest with an intimate portrait of two people whose personal and professional lives became inseparable.

The TIFF presentation gives Toronto audiences an opportunity to experience the film on the big screen ahead of its wider theatrical and IMAX release this fall. Everest: The Other Side is also screening at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival before arriving in Toronto, positioning the documentary as one of the high-profile nonfiction titles on the 2026 festival circuit. With spectacular mountain imagery alongside a deeply personal story of ambition, partnership and perseverance, Vasarhelyi and Chin’s latest film looks beyond the question of whether Everest can be conquered and instead examines what drives people to risk everything to reach the other side.
