Tasha Hubbard’s Meadowlarks @TIFF 50
Director Tasha Hubbard’s Meadowlarks focuses on four siblings reunited 50 years after being separated at birth during The Sixties Scoop

Tasha Hubbard’s Meadowlarks Poised for an Emotional World Premiere at TIFF 50
At the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival—the landmark 50th edition running from September 4 to 14—Meadowlarks, directed by celebrated Indigenous filmmaker Tasha Hubbard, will receive its world premiere as part of the prestigious Special Presentations program. This narrative drama, Hubbard’s first scripted feature, offers a poignant exploration of four Cree siblings who were separated during Canada’s Sixties Scoop and now reunite decades later in Banff, navigating both estrangement and the fragile hopes of reconnection. A film rooted in profound emotional resonance and cultural healing, Meadowlarks builds creatively upon Hubbard’s earlier documentary Birth of a Family (2017), now reimagined through the lens of fiction for a powerful new narrative awakening.
From nîpawistamâsowin: We Will Stand Up to Meadowlarks—A Filmmaker’s Evolving Vision
FERNTV‘s interview with Tasha Hubbard in 2019 about nîpawistamâsowin: We Will Stand Up at Hot Docs offered a compelling window into her fearless storytelling approach—unpacking the deeply moving aftermath of Colten Boushie’s death and the pursuit of justice within Canada’s fraught legal system. Now, as Hubbard pivots from the documentary form to scripted fiction, she brings forward the same unyielding commitment to Indigenous voices, intergenerational trauma, and the work of cultural healing. Meadowlarks stands as a testament to her evolution as both an artist and an educator—a journey that began in Creeland, deepened through documentary, and finds rich new expression in cinematic drama. FERNTV says to prepare for this to be a tearjerker.
