Sydney Sweeney is Christy

Sydney Sweeney delivers a transformative performance as boxing legend Christy Martin in Christy, set to make its world premiere at the 50th Toronto International Film Festival, running from September 4 to 14, 2025. Under the direction of David Michôd—known for Animal Kingdom and The King—the film explores Martin’s rise to prominence in 1990s women’s boxing and her survival against a horrific domestic abuse attack in 2010. Sweeney, who also serves as a producer on the project, underwent an intense physical transformation—gaining over 30 pounds of muscle and training daily in weightlifting and kickboxing—to authentically embody Martin’s strength and presence both inside and outside the ring.

“My body was completely different,” Sweeney told W magazine about her transformation. “I didn’t fit in any of my clothes. I’m usually a size 23 in jeans, and I was wearing a size 27. My boobs got bigger. And my butt got huge. It was crazy! I was like, Oh my god but it was amazing: I was so strong, like crazy strong.”

The script—co‑written by Michôd and Mirrah Foulkes—balances the spectacle of elite-level boxing with the emotional gravity of Martin’s journey, navigating themes of empowerment, identity, and resilience. Supporting performances include Ben Foster as James Martin, Merritt Wever, Katy O’Brian, Ethan Embry, Jess Gabor, and Chad L. Coleman. Early reactions to the first stills, circulating widely in media and on social platforms, highlight how unrecognizable Sweeney looks—with dark curls, a muscular physique, and ring gear—underscoring the film’s immersive and transformative ambition. FERNTV says this will give Sydney Sweeney the Oscar nod.
