It Was Just An Accident

At the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi‘s It Was Just an Accident clinched the prestigious Palme d’Or, which was a major milestone in his career. The film, a satirical drama inspired by Panahi’s own experiences in prison, follows a group of former prisoners who confront their alleged torturer. Despite being banned from filmmaking by the Iranian government, Panahi secretly completed the project, which features women not adhering to the compulsory hijab law, symbolizing defiance against oppressive regulations. The film received an eight-minute standing ovation at its premiere, and in his acceptance speech, Panahi called for unity among Iranians against the regime

Shortly after its Cannes premiere, distribution rights for It Was Just an Accident were acquired by Mubi for several regions, including Latin America, the U.K., Ireland, Germany, Austria, Turkey, and India. Neon secured the rights for North America, continuing its streak of acquiring Palme d’Or-winning films, having previously distributed Parasite, Titane, and Triangle of Sadness. The film’s success at Cannes not only underscores Panahi’s resilience in the face of adversity, but it also highlights Neon’s commitment to bringing critically acclaimed international cinema to a broader audience. FERNTV says this is film is one not to miss, especially the way Neon is going by picking up these films.
