Nicole Kidman and Harrison Dickinson in Babygirl

In director Halina Reijn’s provocative new film Babygirl, Nicole Kidman stars as Romy, a high-powered executive entangled in a turbulent affair that defies the typical bounds of infidelity. Despite her passionate marriage with her urbane theatre director husband (Antonio Banderas), Romy’s quest for fulfillment drives her into the arms of Samuel, a young and audacious intern played by Harris Dickinson. Their connection unfolds with a mix of tension and desire, culminating in a steamy encounter that explores the intricacies of power and control.

The film, premiering at both TIFF 2024 and the Venice Film Festival, pushes the boundaries of the erotic thriller genre to delve deeper into emotional and psychological landscapes. Rather than adhering strictly to genre conventions, Reijn—known for her work on Bodies Bodies Bodies—uses Babygirl to examine complex dynamics of desire and dominance, drawing comparisons to works like Steven Shainberg’s Secretary while forging its distinct path. The film’s raw and unfiltered approach to intimacy and power challenges audiences to confront their perceptions of these themes. FERNTV says this film may leave you hot and bothered.
