The Substance Is Body Horror Sustenance @TIFF2024
Demi Moore plays the most fitting role at this point in her career

The Substance directed by Coralie Fargeat, stars Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley in a compelling narrative that blends science fiction with psychological drama. Demi Moore portrays a fading celebrity who, in a desperate bid to reclaim her former glory, turns to a black market drug. This drug, a cell-replicating substance, temporarily creates a younger and more vibrant version of herself, embodied by Margaret Qualley. As she navigates the complexities of her new life, the film delves into themes of identity, vanity, and the price of fame. The Substance will be the opening premiere for the Midnight Madness selection at TIFF this year.
Premiering at Cannes, “The Substance” received an 11-minute standing ovation and won the Best Screenplay prize, underscoring its impact on audiences and critics alike. The film’s exploration of the human desire for youth and perfection is both thought-provoking and unsettling, heightened by Fargeat’s masterful direction and the powerful performances of Moore and Qualley. The narrative’s twists and turns keep viewers on edge, while the underlying commentary on the superficiality of celebrity culture adds depth to the story. FERNTV says this film has a lot of Cronenberg and Nicolas Winding Refn vibes to it.
