Claire Denis returns to the Toronto International Film Festival for its landmark 50th edition with the world premiere of The Fence, a taut and unflinching adaptation of Bernard-Marie Koltès’ play Black Battles with Dogs. Starring Matt Dillon as British supervisor Horn, the film situates audiences within the tense confines of a private construction company in Africa, where a tragic workplace death sets off a chain of confrontations. Alongside co-stars Tom Blyth, Mia McKenna-Bruce, and Isaach De Bankolé, Dillon anchors a story that simmers with unease as grief, guilt, and power dynamics collide. Denis’ direction transforms the construction site into a pressure cooker of emotions, highlighting her trademark ability to extract both intimacy and volatility from her characters.

The premiere carries the weight of expectation, with Denis’s long-standing reputation as one of the world’s most incisive filmmakers drawing cinephiles eager to witness her latest vision. TIFF audiences will be immersed in the film’s chamber-like intensity, where issues of racial inequality, exploitation, and masculinity are stripped bare in stark and unsettling fashion.

As the tension between Horn, Cal, Leonie, and Alboury unravels into explosive revelations, Denis forces viewers to confront uncomfortable truths often left unspoken. The Fence’s premiere was not only a highlight of TIFF 50, but also a reminder of Denis’ fearless artistry, as she once again challenges the festival’s audience to look directly into the shadows of human behaviour. FERNTV says if you haven’t caught a Claire Denis film yet, this is the time to do it.
