Los Lobos Native Sons Rise Once Again @SXSW 2026

Bad Bunny made all the Latinos proud globally after his stunning and colourful performance at the Super Bowl. He also brought out legendary icon Ricky Martin, who pushed the boundaries of Spanish music during the turn of the century. But who were some of the bands or musicians who pushed Spanish music into the mainstream before reggaeton even existed?

Los Lobos was a band that pushed their music into the mainstream, and millions across the world embraced it with open arms. It’s been 50 years since they embarked on their music with their hits like “La Bamba.” Millions around the world watched the story of Richie Valens in the movie “La Bamba,” for which Los Lobos wrote the soundtrack.

Now, audiences at SXSW will get to experience their journey on the silver screen when the documentary Los Lobos Native Sons hits the city of Austin. There is no better place or time to have this documentary premiere in this city. The film will show the pioneering roots of Latin music entering the mainstream through the lens of directors Doug Blush and Piero F. Giunti. The film will also highlight the fact that Los Lobos were from East L.A., in which Cheech Marin will make an appearance to celebrate that.

Through performances and interviews, a whole host of cultural figures and artists are in the mix in this documentary. Linda Ronstadt, Rubén Blades, Tom Waits, Dolores Huerta, Danny Elfman, Billy Gibbons, Jackson Browne, Cheech Marin, Edward James Olmos, Peter Frampton, George Lopez, Bonnie Raitt and Ruben Albarran (Cafe Tacuba) are among who will speak to the trailblazing journey of Los Lobos. The genre-defying band who mixed blues, rock and roll, roots, soul and Mexican music to into a sound that they would call their own.
