TRIBECA 2023
Milli Vanilli @ Tribeca Film Festival 2023
A look back to the journey of Milli Vanilli and how their downfall changed the world

It’s crazy today with technology and how we can create videos and lip sync and put it on TikTok. Let alone all of today’s latest software that autotunes our voices and make them sound like something we are not. We deem all of this to be acceptable especially where there are way too many options for music. Back then the music industry was always looking for ways to make a quick buck. Milli Vanilli may have been one of those origin stories of where record companies built like corporations got greedy. Especially when it came to their treatment of artists.
Gone Platinum
The self-titled documentary directed by Luke Korem will premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival and is setting the record straight. Rob Pilatus and Fabrice Morvan of Milli Vanilli were caught in one of the biggest scams in music history. The group that sold over 30 million records of “Girl You Know Its True” and went platinum six times over had everyone fooled in the late 80s
The Grammy award-winning duo with their charm and infectious performances came all crashing down. One night they were performing and the song began to skip which prompted the duo to get off stage. This was concerning to fans as they voiced their resentment towards the group after putting a stop to the performance. It was the beginning of the end for Milli Vanilli as the world where calling them out as lip-syncing performers.
This intriguing documentary will revisit the journey of Milli Vanilli and the audience will decide for themselves who is really to blame for this global prank. Do we point fingers at the record company who were selling the product but had both Rob and Fabrice as the brand ambassadors? Why until this day there has not been any pushback towards the record company? Are we really going to be pointing fingers at Rob and Fabrice for seizing the opportunity and coming from nothing? Or should we blame ourselves for being a vain and agist audience? Wouldn’t we not accept or buy records from performers who don’t fit the bill?
