Don’t expect Ryan Crosson to crossover and start playing dance music’s top hits anytime soon. The man will always be sticking to his roots and playing the music that will always represent his style. Wherever he is on the map, Ryan Crosson delivers a unique fusion of house and techno drizzled with a black jazz, west african and proto-disco emulsion. The Detroit native will always have you saying when you listen to his sets, “Wow, I can’t believe he dropped that...” or “Wow, I haven’t heard that in a while.” Ryan always brings you to the crossroads of mixing the old in with the new and its really up to you to ask yourself if his sound is original or just pure genius. Name That Track had an exclusive interview with Ryan who will surely get you moving on the floor during the Movement Festival this year...

NTT: I take it that the move to Berlin is a lot more easier for artists
like yourself who are from Detroit because you get the support from
artists who have made that same move like Seth and Richie?

Ryan: The move to Berlin was difficult in some ways because I had never lived outside of Detroit before for an extended period.  I was extremely close with my family and it was difficult to leave them behind.  A benefit was that Seth, Lee and I were all moving together at the same time.  While Rich & the Minus family were already here, I was not super super close with them.  The biggest help moving to Berlin was Shaun Reeves.  He had been living here for some time and helped us with finding an apartment and getting settled.  It would've been such a pain without Shaun.

NTT: No matter where you are in the world, do you still feel that it is
necessary to preserve and represent Detroit techno culture? In other
words, you can't really forget where you came from?

Ryan:  I grew up in the Metro area my whole life until moving to Berlin and even if I never go back it will always be a part of me.  When traveling I always get asked about Detroit and many people comment that they don't associate me with that city because I'm not playing detroit techno or a complete set of beatdown house.  I may not meet their expectation of what a Detroit DJ/Producer should be, but for the time when I was there and coming up I feel I am a partial representation of what was happening in Detroit at that time.  The scene was becoming smaller and the sound was changing. M_nus, Paxahau & Spectral were at the forefront of the city at that time and those people are what had the most profound effect on me.

NTT: Were some of the records that you sample music from for your
production passed down to you from past generations? Can you comment
on one that stands out in your mind?

Ryan:   Unfortunately I missed out on my Dad's record collection by a few years.  He had always had a huge stack in the bottom shelves of our entertainment center until I was around 16 years old.  When I finally had turntables, everything was gone.  I don't know how much I would've found to my liking but there had to be a few things for sure.  I was sampling from the Ethiopiques collection for a while and some ambient to get textural sounds.  Now I've moved on to more abstract jazz and early experimental music from the 40's and 50's.  The sampling goes in phases I guess and it probably does with other people and their machines, VST's or sample banks.  It's fun looking for new sounds and trying to apply them to a new idea or taking your music in a different direction.  Sometimes it leads you to a new trick or technique you can apply to many different situations

NTT: You have done a track with Voodeux, what was it like to work with
them?

Ryan:    I was asked to remix them for Dirtybird as part of their Paranormal album release.  I've still never met them but flattered that they asked me to be a part of the project.  Sometimes while remixing the artist will omit certain sounds from the pack that they provide for you to use but the Voodeux boys gave everything and in great quality which helped the process.

NTT: What can we expect from your shows at DEMF and are there other
things that are coming up for this this year?

Ryan:   On Friday Sergio Giorgini and I are doing our first live performance as Birds & Souls for 10 Years of Spectral @ Yel 3.  We finally have some additional material together to present.  In addition Seth, Lee, Matt and Ryan are also playing so it's gonna be a great start to the weekend.   Sunday I'll be DJ'ing at the Festival on the Detroit Stage around 5pm I believe.  To wrap the weekend up will be our 5th annual Need I Say More party at the Old Miami.  We recently just added Masomenos to the lineup and hopefully a few other guests will pop in.

For the rest of the year I'm looking forward to finalizing a 2nd release with Cesar Merveille.  We have one EP finished that will come out on Circus Company, the 2nd will most likely be for Wagon Repair and may even turn into an album.  A few remixes are on the way for Minus & Murmur and a solo EP for Cityfox will be done soon.  The Visionquest boys will begin their album in June and hopefully have the label launched by late September/early October.  Details need to be worked out with a distributor but I don't see it being too much of a problem.  We're committed to the project and if it costs

NTT: Is there a track that you love to play that everyone wants you to
name?

Ryan: Yes I have a few bombs my friend Pablo Cahn that people always ask me about.  They both should be out soon ;)
