John Digweed is going to give you the total package when he drops his upcoming album “Structures”. Not only is this album double-sided giving your more minutes of listening pleasure to your ear but there is a documentary called “Eye of the Storm” ready to give you some candy rain for you eyes. Pablo Casacuberta is the man behind this documentary and he is no stranger to this type of art. With the experience of working with musicians and public figures in the past, the time to see how the world reacts to John Digweed from the perspective of Pablo Casacuberta. Without further ado, we introduce Pablo Casacuberta to Name That Track...

NTT:   Can you tell us how this project for "Eye of the Storm" came about?

Pablo: John had been for quite some time considering having some audiovisual material released, and when I met Natalia Mendez, the executive producer of the project, and Ian Hindmarsh, John's manager, we thought that one of his South American tours could be an ideal setting for the film.

NTT:    Were you familiar with John Digweed before the project?

Pablo: I certainly knew that he existed and that he was very relevant in his field, but I wasn't familiar with the whole range of his work. One of the key points of this documentary was to try to avoid the most common place approaches to the visual representation of the work of a DJ, and then the fact that I wasn't coming from a DJ culture background was actually an asset in the process, rather than a problem.

NTT:  Can you tell us a little bit about the process of doing the "Eye of the Storm"...was there some type of strategy or plan of attack?

Pablo: My feeling about  public figures in general is that generally their public side is widely known, and that any visual exploration of their work should then deal with what is more obscure, intimate or hard to grasp in their presentations in front of an audience. Rather than amplifying what the audience already knows, I try to focus in the artist's inner journey. In order to do that, I try to generate visual metaphors that could reveal their mental processes, their aspirations and their feelings. And those metaphors, as it always happens when we deal with somebody's mind, end up being weirder and more unpredictable than the common images that capture performances or public appearances.
NTT: Who are some of the past musicians that you have worked with for projects such as this?

Pablo: I have had so far the chance to capture interviews and visual accounts of the work of 138 Brazilian composers, including Gilberto Gil and Nando Reis. I also did DVDs for several Brazilian, Argentine and Uruguayan musicians, spending a lot of time with some of them, as it's the case with Bajofondo, Supervielle, Jorge Drexler and Paulinho Moska. I was nominated for a Latin Grammy on the Best Video category for a video for Bajofondo, which was a greatly rewarding experience.

NTT:  You are into different forms of art, what type of art do you find most gratifying?

Pablo: I tend to consider all art forms as part of a single, universal quest for expression and enrichment of our experience. I feel amazed by the fact that I had the amazing opportunity to publish and exhibit several kinds of art forms, and I'm equally thrilled by all of them.

NTT:  Is there a musician or artist that you would love to work with in the future?

Pablo: I never worked for any musician from which I didn't learn a great deal. Meeting each artist means for me an opportunity to explore a world that is different to mine, and to have a rare, very valuable free pass to his or her inner world. After having met so many artists, It never ceases to amaze me to what extent their experiences, ideas and personal histories are different, unique and universal. My goal is not only to discover new things from an artist, but to create a whole experience, from which artists can also discover elements of their world that were somehow unconscious or hidden from their sight. I often receive comments from them in which the say things like: "I didn't really know that I was like that seen from somebody else's point of view. I'm funnier than I thought". I love it when that happens.
