NTT:   Can you explain what the scene is like in Vancouver and what are the heads mainly listening to down there? Is it house, tech-house, trance, minimal?

Jon: Vancouver is a very diverse, messy scene.  The kids are bangin’ everything from sexy house to nu-disco.  But one thing is for sure, Vancity is lagging behind the times (UK dance scene) when it comes to house music.  Electro house is still a big hit and played at many clubs throughout the city even though it has long since deceased elsewhere.  Some DJs are pushing that new tech-house sound that is huge in Germany right now, but Vancouver is slow to take on new things. Hence why I recently moved to Toronto! Either way, there’s something for everyone in Vancity, you just have to find it.

NTT:   What is like to be signed to Hi-Bias records and how is this is a big step in your career?

Jon: The first weekend I moved to Toronto, I got hooked up with Hi-Bias records through DJ Addy (Toolroom Records – Mark Knight’s Label).  This is huge for me, will definitely put my brand, Jon Stagger, on the map! Hi-Bias records launched in 1990 with fellow DJ Michael Ova, they have built the label into Canada's most successful underground dance indie- confirmed by his 1999 induction into the CanDance Hall of Fame. Nick Fiorucci label owner of Hi-Bias said this recently in an interview: "I groom the artist, produce them, then press, package, release, market and promote the music."  This is why joining the Hi-Bias family is so exciting for me!  My new track “Jon Stagger – Rompio” signed to Hi-Bias will be featured on: Canada’s Finest House 2 in the new year!  Some of the big names on the 1st compilation last year were: Deadmau5, Hatiras, Deko-ze, Addy, and MC Flipside.  Shortly after I got signed with Hi-Bias, I was offered a gig to DJ in Cairo, Egypt which I definitely will be taking up sometime soon in the New Year! I’m currently searching for new management and possibly an agent.

NTT:  Who are some of your biggest influences?

Jon: Steve Lawler is my #1, Carlo Lio, Addy, The Junkies, Peter Bailey, Lauhaus, DJ T, Strict Border, Radioslave, Saeed Younan, Darius Syrossian, Nyra, Oxia, Audiofly to name a few.

NTT:   Is it true that you do not need to be in a major town of music to become known on the charts?

Jon: It’s all about being original and fresh, creating a new sound that is in line with today’s house music, not just copying someone else’s big hit.  If your heart is in it, if your passion is truly house music and you know how to market and promote yourself and your sound, then I don’t think being in a major town of music is necessary to get there.  You need to network and hustle all the time if you really want it!

NTT:  Does the city of Vancouver or being from the west perhaps gives you a better frame of mind when producing tracks?

Jon: I’ve produced tracks in Vancouver, Mexico, UK and now Toronto.  Every location has a different vibe and feel.  The important thing is to stay focused and place yourself somewhere where you can really turn it up and get into the groove.

NTT:  What is a track that you play that everyone wants you to name for them?

Jon: Right now, there is a huge remix of “Lil' Louis & The World - I Called U” floating around.  I’m pretty sure Steve Lawler remixed it! Every time I drop it and that sax sample kicks in, people go mental.  It’s just such a sexy, groovy tune.  Definitely a dance floor filler.  Watch for it on one of my new mixes @ www.djstagger.com

It seems that the city of Toronto keeps on stealing great artists from Vancouver.  First Noah Pred now Jon Stagger had made the move over to the big city and quickly has signed on to one of Canada’s premiere undeground dance labels Hi-Bias.  Now ready to make a name for himself in the big city and set to release his new track “Rompio” in the new year, Jon is set to play his trump card.  That being the twisted house sound that everyone loves to dance and swagger to.   Name That Track caught up to Jon for a quick pow-wow...
