You got to give it up for Cazhmere who has been in the game of music video making for quite a period of time and her award for Best Music Video Going Back to Hali during the Reel World Film Festival was well deserved. Her vision of directing music videos for some of the big players in the Canadian music industry did not come over night. Cazhmere has worked hard to get to this point with the likes of Ivana Santilli, Justin Nozuka and Choclair to name a few on her impressive resume. Whats so good about Cazhmere is that with every video she directs, her knack for the Canadian music culture and her vision towards putting it all together into her music videos becomes creatively sharp. Going Back To Hali is of course one of her sharpest videos to date.
This might have not been an easy music video to direct for Cazhmere to bring Canadian hip-hop sensation Classified into newer heights in his career along with Josh Martinez and Skratch Bastid. The fact that she had to put in the LL Cool J Going Back to Cali parody in the video somehow and make Halifax of where these artists make reference to as opposed made me curious. She had to maintain the composure of the Canadian hip-hop scene of showing the global market of how Canadians roll without cross-pollinating into other areas of hip-hop genres down south.
I have to of course give praise to starting this video on the right foot by making it almost like the original Going Back to Cali yet focusing on the city of Halifax. But I love the fact that when I was watching this video it reminded me a lot of the 3rd Bass videos such as Gas Face and Brooklyn Queens which focused on true hip-hop culture which was about spitting rhymes, cutting records, and having a good time. Cazhmere brings us back to the virtues of hip-hop without having to bring all that stereotypical in your face booty, cash and gold. The video fits the bill of course to the flow of Josh Martinez and Classified and to of course this sick beat. Providing more to the break is Scratch Bastid and his nasty mixing set makes this video pay respect to true hip-hop culture. With this included, the video just rolls and of course rock and more importantly mashing the old and new school together.
Its inspiring that the Reel World Film Festival has acknowledged the world of music video making and the hard work that has been put into them from the likes of Cazhmere. The Reel World Film Festival informed as to what is specifcally going on in present day music video making which I can not capture on todays music video outlets which prominently puts nothing but reality shows. What is more important is that this video is a real representation of true Canadian hip-hop culture and the genre itself which to some has been a dying breed because of its oversaturation of gangsterism, money, violence and sex. Going Back to Hali simply put is clean and fun which hip-hop music should always be because the music always sounds better this way.
